Fake scanner

I am not sure how I got this on Firefox. But it’s really funny. Let me bring you through this screenshot, from left to right:

  • “wide range of bad cookies?” Can anyone explain to me what are those?
  • It detected my system is Windows 2000 (obviously, it’s not), but faked a Windows XP style popup window?
  • My System: The scanning progress seemed to scan something… but I didn’t know file system of Linux uses C:\ and I thought Documents and Settings (not sure the folder name) is the places for user folders
  • Latest Bad Cookie: It reminds me again that I am using “Windows 2000.”
  • “Cleanator?” What’s that?

Kind Spammer

Although I 100% believe that email is fake or that would be additional bonus to the spammer if I was stupid enough to send a mail. Why the email address not in clear text? Spammer is afraid of spammers, too?

Hello! I’m Googlebot

I got a funny comment: “Hello! I’m Googlebot.”

Really? Oh! I see, and I’m your father. You are grounded. Go back to your room! NOW!

Spam Filter Free Day?

This sounds interesting. Currently, I use Akismet + comment approval + .htaccess blocking. I will try to turn off Akismet and remove blocking in .htaccess, but I won’t let comment shows up without my approval. I can also test how good Akismet can re-check comments if they are spams or not.

Block, block and block WordPress spammers

Sadly, blocking seems to be the only way we can stop them ruining our blogs. Akismet works perfectly, it blocks 100+ spams a day. However the bandwidth is wasted, although the amount is not much.

I tried to find out who requested wp-comments-post.php more than 5 times before 18th of November. The results more than 100 IPs, I denied them in .htaccess. Less than 7 days, the number of last 15 days spams dropped from 1500+ to 850. If there is a WordPress plugin can use Akismet’s data to block, that would be more efficient. Yes, this could be my next WordPress plugin.

Updated at 12/10: I have unblocked those IPs for few days, interesting thing is the Akismet blocking count didn’t increase. Now is around 100. I wonder if spammer’s programs record were they blocked?

Yes! I beat two splogs down!

Okay! I may have beaten two splogs down.

I found two splogs on Blogger which duplicate my blog posts about one or two months ago. I felt disappointed and tried everything that I can do except sending DMCA form. Those include:

  • Report ads is not relevant at all and website is useless with violation of AdSense policies to Google AdSense.
  • Use Google Webmaster Tools to report spam in their index
  • Flag the splogs, every time I turn on my computer.
  • Report to SplogSpot

About one week ago, one of these two splogs lost its ads. Today, two splogs has gone. I have left my email address in those forms but I didn’t get any responses. So, I don’t know did Google staff shut down the splogs because of my complaints or they spotted the splogs on their own. Anyway, in either case, I am very happy!

Time to Fight Back against Scrapers

dashboardblogsearchIn early July (maybe earlier), I have noticed this kind of infringement of copyright (see the image at right, it was posted on July 1st and partially duplicated on the same day), some people partially duplicate your blog posts with exactly same post title. But I didn’t take any actual steps to stop this. I only changed the licensing method. About three days ago, I noticed another incident on my another post (second image at right). That post was posted on August 1st, then partially duplicated on August 7th. Today, I read the article, WordPress.com Blogs Feeds Scraped, through dashboard. Now I have 10 posts has been duplicated on the same website.

Is time to fight back? Can poor bloggers?

I have to say… it’s not easy!

How to locate

Check your WordPress dashboard

The Incoming Links section provides some traces from scrapers. Try to follow the links. By the way, you can also comment on those real posts, that will make some real friends for you.

Use Google Blog Search

Google Blog Search updates more frequent than Google Search for blogs. You can try to search:

  • Your root of blog, e.g. link:http://www.yourblog.com/blog/
  • A sentence of first paragraph or your titles of your posts, which are popular and fresh.
  • The permanent link of your posts, which are popular and fresh. E.g. link:http://www.yourblog.com/blog/2007/01/01/a-blog-post-slug/

6,499 / 30 ~= 217… Two hundred and seventeen spams a day.

Too many comment spams

Antispam pluginSpamers are too many! I don’t want to waste my time to delete those spams. Hope Did You Pass Math? this antispam plugin can block some of them.
